Potential Birders are aware that some people have a self-perception or identity as a birder. They transform from a Potential Birder to an Apprentice Birder by becoming interested in developing into a Birder and deciding to work toward that end.
A uestion to research is how Potential Birders become interested in becoming a birder; in other words, how do Potential Birders become interested in developing an identity as a Birder?
One hypothesis is that interest emerges from a comparison of one's personal motivations (what makes you tick as a person?) and the identity-defining characteristic traits associated with being a Birder. If someone fancies herself as wanting to be an explorer, discoverer, confident, patient, connected-to-nature kinid of person and associates those traits with being a birder, then it may very well make sense for that person to want to become a Birder.
