Un-birders becoming Potentials

Un-birders are people who are not even aware that some people think of birding as more than an activity that people do, that birding can be an important part of who they are as individuals.

In the process of becoming a Birder, an Un-birder first becomes a Potential Birder, then an Apprentice Birder, and finally a Recruited Birder.  Transforming from an Un-birder to a Potential Birder requires developing an awareness that it is possible for some people to develop an identity as a birder.  Many Potential Birders eventually become interested in developing a birder identity.

Awareness that birders' identitities exist can arise through direct contact with birders, or indirectly through magazines, books, blogs, etc.

An important question to research is whether the same individuals, groups, or organizations who help Un-birders become aware of birders' identities also become important sources of identity-producing power (see Glossary) for those people.
